OpenAI’s Big Announcement at DevDay 2025
OpenAI has recently announced something really interesting at their annual DevDay conference. Starting this Monday, ChatGPT is adding interactive apps directly into the chat interface. When we say this, we are talking about apps like Booking.com, Expedia, Spotify, Figma, Coursera, Zillow, and Canva, all accessible without leaving your chat.
CEO Sam Altman explained the vision during his speech: We want ChatGPT to be a great way for people to make progress, to be more productive, more inventive, to learn faster, to do whatever they’re trying to do in their lives better. This will enable a new generation of apps that are interactive, adaptive, and personalized, that you can chat with.
It is definitely a bold move that could give a 360 degree change to how we think about using apps.
How Exactly Are They Making It Work?
The concept is surprisingly straightforward. Instead of opening separate apps or websites, you just mention what you need in your ChatGPT conversation. Want to turn a rough sketch into a proper diagram? Type “Figma, turn this sketch into a workable diagram” and the Figma app appears right there in the chat.
Interested in learning about machine learning? Ask “Coursera, can you teach me something about machine learning?” and you will get access to Coursera’s content without switching apps.
The Zillow demo they showed was particularly impressive. Users could ask ChatGPT in natural language to find apartments within a specific price range in their area. The chat would then display an interactive map with options, and users could continue the conversation to learn more about each listing. Everything happens in one place, which is actually a big deal when you think about how much time we spend jumping between different apps and browser tabs.
You Get The Best Suggestions Without Any Effort!
Here’s something interesting: ChatGPT will also proactively suggest apps when it thinks they’d be useful. Planning a party and mention needing music? The Spotify app might pop up ready to help you create a playlist. It is meant to feel less like you are calling up tools and more like you are having a conversation that naturally connects you with the right resources.
OpenAI says more apps are coming soon, including DoorDash, Instacart, Uber, and AllTrails. The potential scope here is pretty broad.
Why Is This Different From What’s Already Happening?
OpenAI has tried building an app ecosystem before with the GPT Store, but that was essentially a separate marketplace. This new approach is fundamentally different because apps integrate directly into your normal ChatGPT conversations. For developers, that means much better visibility and distribution. For users, it removes friction from the experience.
The technical foundation uses something called the Model Context Protocol (MCP), which lets developers connect their data sources to ChatGPT. These apps can trigger actions, display fully interactive interfaces, and even show videos that stay pinned to the top of your screen and respond to your requests.
Wanna Understand The Business Model?
If you already have a subscription to one of these services, you will be able to log into your account directly within ChatGPT to access your premium features. Altman also mentioned that OpenAI plans to support monetization for developers building these apps, including through their recently launched Instant Checkout feature. So there’s clearly a business ecosystem they’re trying to build here.
Answering Your Questions!
There are some important concerns that have not been fully addressed yet. Privacy is the big one. OpenAI says developers must “collect only the minimum data they need, and be transparent about permissions.” But there’s no clear answer yet about how much of your ChatGPT conversation history these third-party developers can actually see. Will they have access to your entire chat history? Just recent messages? Only the specific prompt that called up their app? These are important questions that need clarification.
There’s also the matter of competition. When you have multiple similar services available, say, DoorDash and Instacart, how does ChatGPT decide which one to show you? OpenAI says they’ll prioritize user experience, but it is not hard to imagine scenarios where companies might want to pay for preferential placement. How that gets handled will matter a lot.
What This Means Going Forward?
OpenAI is essentially positioning ChatGPT as a platform layer between users and all the other services they use. That’s a significant strategic move with major implications for the broader tech ecosystem. Whether developers embrace this model and whether users find it genuinely useful remains to be seen.
What’s certain is that Monday marks a notable shift in what ChatGPT is trying to be. it is no longer just a chatbot or an AI assistant, it is becoming something more like an operating system for AI-powered interactions. That’s either the future of how we’ll use software, or it is an ambitious experiment that might not pan out. Either way, it is worth paying attention to.
