ChatGPT is on its way to becoming one of the most pervasive AI platforms globally, in only a matter of time. Nick Turley, the Vice President and head of ChatGPT, shared that ChatGPT is expected to reach 700 million weekly users soon. That’s a big increase from 500 million users back in March last year. This also reflects four times more than the same period last year.
Turley shared the news on X (formerly Twitter), saying:
“This week, ChatGPT is on track to reach 700M weekly active users — up from 500M at the end of March and 4× since last year. Every day, people and teams are learning, creating, and solving harder problems. Big week ahead. Grateful to the team for making ChatGPT more useful and delivering on our mission so everyone can benefit from AI.”
As of now, there are no plans to publish a comparison of ChatGPT user experiences versus those used by conventional search engines (e.g. Google or Bing), as these firms generally share distinct data.
For example:
Google does not disclose its weekly users. As early as 2004, just six years in, Google was processing 200 million searches daily and by the year 2009 that number had grown to four billion searches per day.
By 2023, Microsoft’s Bing, which now includes AI functions such as Bing Chat, said that it has reached 100 million daily active users. This is the number for a chat interface with AI, not the complete Bing search engine.
While legacy search engines were nurtured in the early ages of the internet, ChatGPT was born in a world where people mostly had digital means. That helped grow it much faster to the masses.
OpenAI does not disclose how many people are using ChatGPT daily, however, the weekly users provide an insight into regular usage. WAU or weekly active users are one of the most important metrics to look at as they can indicate better when a product is actually valuable, unlike daily stats that might vary.
This increase in ChatGPT has shown a shift in the way people search for information online. The Wall Street Journal says that AI tools like ChatGPT and Perplexity now make up 5.6% of desktop searches in the U.S., which is more than twice as much as last year.
It is even a more pronounced trend among new AI users Of those who began using large language models in 2024:
This brings ChatGPT closer to the scale of a mainstream digital platform, with it now set to be used by nearly 700 million users a week. With the rise of AI to answer questions, learn on its own, generate ideas and more; though, businesses and marketers will have to look out for it.
So this requires an overhaul of everything from how they think about content creation to content distribution. This is a little more than ranking on Google SEO, it started the era of AI optimization alongside traditional search engine optimization.
