Every single day, 60 million people come to Reddit looking for answers, from humans, not AI, and we want to make it easier for them to find information. Reddit CEO Steve Huffman thinks that is because of the raw and personal truths about human experiences.
Reddit is no longer just an online discussion board. Reddit spoilers now are too valuable. Lots of people add the word “reddit” to the end of their search queries to get less wrong and more direct responses. Google actually pays $60 million yearly to license Reddit content for training AI systems.
So, here is the next big plan of Reddit, to become a search engine. CEO Steve Huffman put it this way in his recent letter to shareholders:
“We’re concentrating our resources on the areas that will drive results for our most pressing needs: improving the core product, making Reddit a go-to search engine, and expanding internationally.”
Reddit Answers are part of that approach, and they’re being tested right now. The tool behaves like an AI chatbot which collaborates with the data pulled from Reddit threads only. For example, a search for iOS 25 problems will reveal the top iOS 25 bugs, linking you to popular Reddit discussions.

Huffman noted:
“Next, we’re expanding Reddit Answers globally, integrating it more deeply into the core search experience, and making search a central feature across Reddit.”
He also touched on the not so obvious value proposition for Reddit:
“Reddit is one of the few platforms positioned to become a true search destination.”
“We offer something special: a breadth of conversations and knowledge you can’t find anywhere else. Every week, hundreds of millions of people come to Reddit looking for advice, and we’re turning more of that intent into active users of Reddit’s native search.”
The goal is to supplement this with both traditional search and AI-powered Answers in a more cohesive manner dot the UX.
Huffman shared:
“We’re pairing these product updates with marketing initiatives to increase awareness and adoption of Reddit Answers worldwide.”
Currently, Reddit Answers is buried in the right-side panel of the site. However, it will likely become more prominent on the platform soon.
Despite the trend towards AI-generated search results wielded by tools like AI Overviews and AI Mode being pushed by companies such as Google, Reddit maintains its strength is in real human responses.
As part of the keynote, Huffman brought up a new survey from users in the US, UK, Australia, and Canada that includes roughly 80% said:
“Some questions can only be answered by humans, as opposed to AI-generated summaries.”
Reddit is a well -positioned platform to improve the way people look for information on the internet, being used daily by millions of people worldwide seeking advice and wisdom. The combination of user-generated content, as well as new AI-powered functionality, may soon make Reddit a major player in the world of search engines.
