Proton Launches Encrypted Google Workspace Alternative With Built-In Video Calls

Swiss privacy company Proton officially entered the business productivity market on March 31, 2026, with the launch of Proton Workspace, a fully integrated, encryption-first Google Workspace alternative that bundles email, file storage, documents, spreadsheets, a password manager, VPN, and a brand-new video conferencing tool under one subscription.

Highlights:

  • Proton Workspace launched as a fully encrypted alternative to Google Workspace and Microsoft 365.
  • Proton Meet offers end-to-end encrypted video calls with no account required to join.
  • The entire suite applies zero-access encryption so even Proton cannot read your data.
  • Proton has not raised prices on existing customers in over a decade.

The launch is a significant step for a company already trusted by 100 million users for its encrypted email and VPN. Proton Workspace brings all of Proton’s privacy-first services into a single offering, directly targeting businesses that rely on Google Workspace or Microsoft 365 but are growing uncomfortable with how those platforms handle data.

Why Businesses Are Reconsidering Google and Microsoft?

The concern is not abstract. Platforms like Microsoft Teams and Google Meet have been accused of harvesting user data to train their AI models. While no definitive proof confirms video calls are being fed into these systems, the terms of service for several major platforms acknowledge that audio, video, and chat data may be used for AI improvement. For organizations in healthcare, legal, or finance, that ambiguity carries real operational risk.

Proton supports compliance with GDPR, HIPAA, and CCPA, and operates under Swiss jurisdiction, which has some of the toughest privacy laws globally. That legal and structural foundation is precisely what makes it a credible Google Workspace alternative for regulated industries.

What Proton Workspace Includes As A Google Workspace Alternative?

The suite covers everything a modern team needs: Proton Mail, Calendar, now with appointment scheduling, Drive, Docs and Sheets, Meet, VPN, and Pass. Unlike Google Workspace, where encryption is partial and the provider retains access to your data, Proton applies end-to-end encryption and zero-access architecture across the entire bundle. Even Proton itself cannot read your stored or transmitted content.

Encrypted Video Without an Account, Proton Launched A Encrypted Alternative

The standout new product is Proton Meet. It works like any standard video conferencing tool on the surface, but its security architecture is fundamentally different from Zoom or Google Meet.

Calls and chats are end-to-end encrypted by default using the Messaging Layer Security protocol, an open-source E2EE standard. Proton states that confidentiality is assured even if its own infrastructure is compromised.

No Proton account is needed to host or join a call, just generate a link and share it, with no signup, no data collection, and no tracking. This makes it especially useful for journalists, lawyers, medical professionals, and anyone else who cannot risk a third party accessing their conversations.

Proton Meet is available on web, iOS, Android, Windows, Mac, and Linux, with direct integration into Proton Calendar and support for scheduling through Google and Microsoft calendars.

Plans and Pricing

Proton Meet is free for calls of up to 50 participants lasting one hour. The Meet Professional plan costs $7.99 per user per month for extended usage.

For the full suite, Workspace Standard is priced at $12.99 per user per month billed annually, or $14.99 monthly. Workspace Premium costs $19.99 annually or $24.99 monthly, and adds 3TB of storage per user, a 250-participant cap on Meet calls, email data retention policies, and access to Lumo, Proton’s privacy-focused AI assistant.

Existing Proton Business Suite customers are automatically upgraded to Workspace Standard, including Proton Meet, at no additional cost.

Can It Compete?

Google’s productivity suite serves 11 million business customers, and Microsoft’s reach in enterprise is equally entrenched. Proton is not chasing that entire market. Its audience is the growing number of organizations, particularly in Europe and regulated sectors, for whom data sovereignty is a business requirement, not a preference.

Proton has not raised prices on existing customers in over a decade and has committed to no annual price increases, a meaningful contrast to the steady cost creep from Google and Microsoft.

For teams actively searching for a Google Workspace alternative that does not trade privacy for convenience, Proton has now made that switch genuinely viable.
